A child prodigy of violin, made debut London 1883 and for nine years made concert tours. In 1892 to Paris to study piano with Paderewski one year, and toured Rus­sia as piano concertist 1893-94. After that, piano concertist appearing in cities throughout the world. U.S. debut soloist Boston Symph. 1900. Founder and president Beethoven Assn., New York 1918. President Friends of Music, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; Knight of the Le­gion of Honor; Honorary Doctor of Music, Lawrence Coll.; Vice president Manhattan School of Music. Many arrangements, transcriptions, and edit­ings of works of Bach, Brahms, Schu­bert, Schumann, Handel, Moussorg-sky, Purcell, Haydn, Sibelius, together with original compositions for piano.
